Choosing The Right Shade Of Foundation For Beginners

Omg I will look pale, dark, white 😨 Which is the right shade?

Ladies! 😍 I have got a solution to your everyday problem, it’s a very common question nowadays and has become one of the most troubled one indeed! It’s always confusing to choose the right foundation shade for your skin. When we do it in confusion, we end up choosing a shade darker/lighter than our skin. It still remains to be one of the biggest challenges in makeup.

But some of you might ask, why should you do a foundation research before buying it??

Well, according to my experience, buying a perfect foundation is not my cup of tea. Everytime I buy a foundation, I try many shades and then decide which shade I should go for. I prefer visiting a store and do a patch test with testers before buying any foundation.

Maybelline dream skin satin foundation was my first ever foundation and I made a big mistake in deciding its shade. I bought a very light shade and I was completely white when I applied it. I am going to help you in deciding the shade that is meant for you, let’s go!

Here are the steps that can help you to choose the right shade of your foundation:

  1. Applying a patch on your jawline: Another huge mistake we make while purchasing a foundation at a beauty counter is by testing the foundation shade on the back of our hand. Even the salesperson at the beauty counter does the same thing, he or she swatches the shade of the foundation on the back of the hand. Here we have to understand that the shade of your hand and the shade of your face are different, the shade of your hand is lighter than the shape of your face. So, the best way to test a foundation is to swatch it on your jawline, bringing it down till your neck, if it disappears into your skin, it’s a true match!! If you can see the shade of the foundation swatch, then it’s not the true match for you because the swatch must actually get disappeared.

2. Mixing two shades together (Experiment!): perfect shade never exists! Create your own. Mixing two shades can give you the desired and perfect shade colour. The great thing is, if you cannot find the perfect shade for your skin color or if by chance you have gotten the wrong shade of foundation. The best way to utilize it is to mix and match two or three foundation shades and just make some other shade for your skin color. This is something that I do a lot of times. Usually, I always mix two or three shades and then make another shade of foundation and apply it so there’s no particular specific proportion or magic mantra for this. You can just mix and match and try it out, Experiment a bit!

3. Say no to buying foundations online (Stop right there!): Always go to a store to buy foundation and patch test them right there, you will end up replacing colors if shopped online. Once you know your perfect shade and you have an idea of what is your true color, then you can definitely start buying foundations online.

4. Understand your skin: Let’s first understand, what type of foundation is best for your skin type? What is your skin type?

There are 3 types of skin:

  • Dry Skin: If you have dry skin, go for pancake foundation or liquid foundation as they are extremely oily and they will hydrate your skin.
  • Oily Skin: If you have oily skin, you should opt for powder foundation or liquid matte foundations.
  • Combination Skin: If you have combination skin, you have to analyze whether it’s more on the dry side or to the oily side and then you can choose your foundation accordingly.

5. Types of Foundations:

  • Let’s first talk about liquid foundations.

They’re generally, universally suitable for all skin types, from dry to oily to combination skin. They give a nice Coverage and are available from low, medium to full coverage range.

  • The second category is cream foundations

Cream Foundations are more or less something similar to liquid foundations, but the texture of cream foundations is much heavier, so this is more suitable for people with dry to combination skin types because it’s very oily in texture. The formula is very oily and sticky.

  • Then the third category is the stick foundations.

Now the stick foundations are generally available in high end and more professional makeup brands for instance, makeup forever. Stick foundations are more suitable for oily skin types. Firstly, it’s not easy to blend stick foundations easily unless you’re a professional or someone who has an idea about stick foundations & about the blending application. Otherwise, it should not be used for dry skin types. Also, stick foundations are more used for television purposes. Like for example, Kryolan uses a lot of stick foundations on models and TV actresses.

  • Then coming down to the fourth category, which is the powder foundation

They are definitely more suitable for oily skin types If you aren’t using another foundation. But generally, powder foundations can be used by dry skin or combination skin types as well. If you are using a foundation, you can put a powder foundation in order to set the liquid or cream foundation that you’ve used previously.

6. Find your Undertone:

Another essential thing is to find your undertone. Now this can be a little tricky but there are few tips as to how you can locate your correct undertone.

Now, how to find the right undertone of your skin type?

For this you may need to look at your veins, I have explained the role of veins in the search of your undertones.

Undertones can be categorized in three forms:

1. Cool Undertones: If your veins are more populous or you can say dark blueish in color, then you are more likely to have a cooler undertone

2. Warm Undertones: If your veins are more greenish in color, then you’re likely to be warmer.

3. Neutral Undertones: if you have a combination of both Bobbitt and greens, then you’re likely to have a neutral undertone.

7. Test your foundation in natural light:

Another great tip is to never test a foundation under yellow lighting. It will never give you the right picture. The best way to test the foundation shade is natural light. Natural light works perfect in these situations.
